NOTE: In its current version, developers recommend not using more than 5 or 6 still photos per video, as often, when trying to use 10, the app crashes. The developers are aware of this. It works better when you use short video clips instead of still photos. I spoke with Kevin from Videolicious on 2/20/12 and was told they are currently working on updating, but won't be releasing it until later in 2012, hopefully by the end of summer. My advice--get it now and check it out! Lots of classroom possibilities.
  • SonicPics ($2.99) 1. Add images from your photo library or snap new ones with your camera. 2. Arrange your photos however you would like.
    3. Record a voice-over narrating your images as you swipe through them. Here's a link to an app review lesson plan you might want to use with your students (easily adapted for book reviews, step by step instructions, etc.) Thanks to Louise Duncan, Australian educator, extraordinaire, for sharing! Check out her blog--lots of great ideas!
  • Scavenger Hunt with Friends (Lite, .99) Easily set up your hunts and complete the items on your list using the camera on your mobile device to provide evidence that you found the item. Set up one-on-one or multi-player hunts with your friends and compete to see who can complete the most items and rack up the most points. Get points based on the difficulty level of the item." I read about a library media specialist who used this app to create a library hunt so kids could learn how it was organized.

NOTE about the app version: You will not get official credit for watching the videos and cannot do the exercises. It's just a convenient way to watch the videos for those who are learning just for the sake of learning.

Language/Literacy

  • Rory's Story Cubes ($1.99) picture story starters
  • Shake a Phrase ($1.99) story starters
  • MomentDiary (free) This is a private diary that makes notes with timestamps. You can take a short note and use it as a private diary, simple business note, diet record, food log, lifetime recording, cash flow record, jotting down what you watch on TV, song titles while you listen to radio...etc.
  • Grammar Up (free edition or $4.99) "Grammar Up is a multiple choice quiz system for English which provides over 1800 questions across 20 grammar categories.
The app was designed to replicate questions with a business focus commonly found in the popular TOEIC (TM) English proficiency test. Grammar Up can help learners to improve their grammar, word selection and vocabulary." Essentially a multiple choice quiz for various parts of speech. I doubt students would consider it a "game" as the developers call it. Could be an alternative for review purposes. Custom timer setting can assist learners to improve response times under exam time constraints.
  • Storylines for Schools) (free) Think the old game "Telephone" with visuals! "You begin a StoryLine with a common saying. A friend grows the StoryLine by illustrating that saying. Another friend titles that drawing (without seeing the original saying). Yet another friend illustrates that title, and so on. Save your favorite completed StoryLines in your Gallery, and share them on Facebook."
  • Poetry Creator/Verses (free) "a fresh spin on a cherished classic: refrigerator magnet poetry. We built this app to set your creativity ablaze with Verses's limitless word mixing possibilities that allow you to become a kind of dictionary DJ. To help you learn, each flash card displays an easy word and two more difficult words derived from the word root. Use the easy word as a mnemonic device to help you remember the meaning of the word root.
  • Painless Grammar Challenge (free) Description from app review by Austin Stroud: "This game is a fun way to review grammar leisurely or use as a refresher before taking an English class. It is from Barron's who is a big name in study guides for all ages. The concept behind this grammar challenge is simple in that you take a quiz, and if you score high enough you get to play a game. The game does not unlock/become available until you have gotten the required score. For quiz 1, for example, you have to get an 80%. The major flaw with this game is that you just are told your percentage at the end, and not told what you missed or an explanation on what you missed. If you are looking for a fun way to learn grammar, this is worth your time. However, for studying you should pick a different app."
  • The Apostrophe Song (.99) The Huffington Post review: "Can the new Apostrophe Song cure the apostrophe crisis? A sort of Schoolhouse Rock for the internet age." Choose from rock, hip-hop, pop/dance or acoustic musical styles.

The integrated combination of text, audio and graphics is designed to facilitate learners of varying abilities and learning styles.
